It has been a few days and I now think I have calmed down enough to write down for memories sake the experience of our first ambulance ride....
On Saturday night my sister came over for supper since both of our hubby's were away, and to let the kids play for a bit. At around 8pm they were getting ready to head home so we sent the girls upstairs to clean up their mess, while Kim and I stayed in the kitchen to finish tidying up. It had only been a few minutes maybe not even when all of a sudden Paytin grabbed my shirt. I turned around and looked at her and she was totally blue and I could see the fear in her eyes. It was almost like she was trying to speak but couldn't. I at first thought she was choking, then her knees buckled and she passed out. I caught her on the way down but once she was on the ground she started to have a seizure. That was when I immediately jumped up and called 911, and Kim dropped to the floor beside Paytin.
By the time I had told the 911 operator where we lived Paytin had came to and took a huge breath of air, at which point Kim scooped her up into her arms and she started to cry. The 911 operator said not to move her so Kim just held her in her arms not wanting to move her any more. It was at that point Paytin said she remembered falling down the stairs.
When the ambulance arrived they checked her over, checked her BP and blood glucose but decided they needed to take her to the Childrens Hospital to have her checked because she did have a seizure and they were still un-certain if she had hit her head or not.
We left in the Ambulance and Kim called Brock who was working up in Lloydminster to fill him in on what had happened. Of course he freaked out and called me in the ambulance for an update, but by that point Paytin was talking and seemed to be feeling better.
At the hospital the doctors checked her over and said everything was okay and that the seizure she had had was not a true seizure but was most likely caused from lack of oxygen to her brain.
From what we have been able to piece together from both Paytin and Rylee was that they were racing up the stairs and Rylee pushed past Paytin which caused her to fall probably straight back about six stairs or so onto the landing. It winded her to the point where she was physically unable to make herself breathe. She luckily was able to make it to me in the kitchen and grab me before passing out which is amazing in itself!
She still complains that her back is sore and I actually took her to the chiropractor today to have it checked. 4 vertebrae in her spine were out which the chiropractor adjusted but still this evening she complains it is sore.
One of the saddest moments for me still though was the next day when I was asking Paytin what she remembers happening (which is not a lot, she doesn't even remember passing out), she told me she remembers her heart hurting. When I asked her what it felt like she responded with "Mom, I thought I was dying". Even thinking about that now makes me cry, for a five year old to ever have to feel that fear is so hard for me to think about. She also remembers her ears "not working" when she grabbed me and I was asking her over and over again what was wrong.
In the end of it all it truly makes me realize how grateful I am for my girls and how much I love them. Also how lucky we are to be able to call an ambulance when we need it and have them there (even if it is a $600 bill!! surprise!). And how grateful I am for family that comes running when you need them. Sometimes I don't even think about what I would do if I didn't have someone to leave Presley with when I had to go with Paytin, or how I would get home from the hospital once released. And most of all I am thankful that my little girl is healthy and okay.
